Critique Groups Schedule and Guidelines

The purpose of these groups is to provide encouragement, guidance, and feedback for our own members’ work in a non-threatening, non-intimidating manner. While suggestions and recommendations are freely given, the decision to follow or not follow is the author’s. Current membership includes both published and non-published authors, but all levels of writing, styles, and subjects are welcome.

Meetings are open to everyone, beginning or advanced, published or unpublished, writers, poets. If you would like to receive some friendly feedback, please bring copies of your materials in order that members can make notes and return the copies to you. For your consideration, guidelines followed are:
  • Our primary goal is to help each other become better and more successful in our field of endeavor.
  • Each meeting begins with members providing a short bio as well as their status as a means of introducing themselves. Please limit this to about one minute per person.
  • Available time is divided by the number of readers - please plan reading time accordingly.
  • Those with copies for all, read first. Short readings, followed by longer.
  • Readers may ask for specific feedback — what skill areas are you looking to address.
  • When reading, add a brief contextual note if needed, to help listeners fit the piece in the whole story.
  • One conversation — If there is a need to leave, please exit early quietly and between reading/discussions.
  • When providing feedback, write notes on appropriate pages and sign the copy before returning. This allows for expansion on explanations and additional conversations outside of the standard meeting format.
  • Listen first then comment.
  • Focus on improvement of writing — less on topic — opinions, questions, etc.
  • All copies are to be returned to the author unless they state otherwise.
